Stuff and things

+ Moritz Waldemeyer presented his work on BBC2 the Culture Show last weekend. (Half way through more or less)

+ Usman is launching Pachube soon, sign up to be a beta tester.
“Pachube (pronounced “patch bay”) is a web service that enables people to tag and share real time sensor data from objects, devices and spaces around the world.
The key aim is to facilitate interaction between remote environments, both physical and virtual. Apart from enabling direct connections between any two responsive environments, it can also be used to facilitate many-to-many connections: just like a physical “patch bay” (or telephone switchboard) Pachube enables any participating project to “plug-in” to any other participating project in real time so that, for example, buildings, interactive installations or blogs can “talk” and “respond” to each other. ”

+ Bruce Sterling talks about the boring year ahead at LIFT

thishappened 3rd edition

We’re once again very proud to sponsor the upcoming interaction design driven event thishappened. Unlike other conferences or events, this one focuses exclusively on the war stories of interaction design, something very close to our heart at Tinker.it.

The format of the event is simple: 10 minutes for each speaker on a project they have executed and what their learnings, struggle or accomplishments were along the way.

Having been to the previous 2 events, I’m happy to say this is one of the most representative event of the world of interaction design: service design, installation design, product design, interactive environments and more are themes that are addressed an continue to paint this growing field as rich and full of potential.

This time again a great set of speakers are lined up and I’m personally really looking forward to hearing from Schulze and Webb about their much anticipated radio project for the BBC.

See you there next week!

Birds

Thought I’d post this up (mostly to prove we do document a lot, I just haven’t had a lot of time to process all the nice vidoes we have and can’t wrap my head around the new version of iMovie) as a nice example of a simple circuit 2 students from Goldsmiths college Sonia Matos and Yuk Hui, put together during a 3 day workshop we organised with 5 different departments. Nice work!

Open hardware and stand alone objects

Check out this article in the Digital Artists Handbook on “embedded Single Board Computers (SBCs) and microcontrollers from birds eye view. ”

Very comprehensive and the rest of the handbook is a lot of fun.

Social History of the Prototype

Next week, I’ll be attending The Social History of the Prototype a great one day seminar held at the University College London which “will examine the social history of the prototype in order to draw out the differences represented by present innovations in technology and manufacture and explore the earlier 18th and 19th century origins and contexts of development underlying current innovations.”

With guests like Tim Hunkin this is sure to be entertaining.
